The tool which is most effective, initally, in overcoming ego is meditation. The variety and different methods of meditation present the beginner with a question of which one is best. Each method has its benefits and rewards. The most common method is where One focuses their attention on the breath. It is the most effective method for the beginner. When this method is combined with counting the breaths or with a short phrase such as So Hum or Aum it works, quite effectively, to quiet the ego’s voice. It also conditions and strengthens the will. As the practitioner proceeds they gain more control over the capricious mind and the mental chatter. There is a point where one becomes strong enough to engage in contemplative meditation without reverting back to uncontrolled mental dialogue. The time it takes to gain control and become strong enough to overcome the outward ego experience is contingent on the consistency and dedication of the practitioner. Initailly, specific times of day and specific locations are necessary. Eventually, these requirements are no longer required as the mind is now under your control versus you being under its control. You are able to meditate, undistracted, virtually anywhere.
When you arrive at this point, many insights and realizations have begun to arise in your consciousness. The ego is on the wane and reality is becoming more clear. On the one hand, this is a very good place to be. On the other hand, it is a dangerous place to be if not guided properly. It is at this phase that a certain “spiritual” arrogance begins to occur. This is the ego applying stealth strategies to reintroduce itself into the control position it has lost. The ego begins by convincing you that you should praise God. God does not have an ego which requires this praise, nevertheless, our ego teaches us that it is a neccessary obligation. In so doing, the ego is establishing its control and instilling in us that we are seperate from the Spirit of God and also justifies the ego’s existence by implicitly establishing the EGO of God. If God has an ego and we are created in His image, we must also have an ego. Neither case is true. It is the attempt to reinstate the illusion of seperation by the ego.
The ego has only one interest and that is “to get”. The Spirit (which is the Divine energy of Love) sees giving as all there is, getting is meaningless.
Meditation, in most circles, is considered the act of emptying the mind or concentrating on one object. As our practise strengthens, meditation is more and more, associated with the contemplative act of careful consideration of the unfolding events of our lives and the synchronicity of Providence. The question of ‘What is our purpose?” becomes more clear and defined. An Awareness is embraced and becomes a major factor of our lives. Ego is subjugated and Love blossoms. Love and Compassion become the predominate motives of our lives. This blossoming is an ongoing unfolding of love and acceptance of others. There is no specific time or place any longer. As you walk the path of life, your meditation at this stage is your very own relationship to life and its myriad of experiences and people. As we gain this understanding we enter and remain within the eternal. (The only aspect of time which is eternal, is NOW) As we reside in the Now, ego is left in the nether world of past or future where ego has no control.
