THE GREAT ESCAPE

There are so many promises of Sages, Saints and charlatans, alike, which guarantee salvation and liberation for sinner and believer. The promises are meant to provide escape routes from the pain and suffering of life, and ultimately, the World.
Our having been put here or having chosen to be here; why do we want to escape? Where do we suppose we will go? The “Pearly gates”, the “Promise Land”? Where?
Saint Thomas was quoted as saying “The kingdom of heaven is spread upon the earth but man fails to see.”
So, do we want to find the Kingdom or do we want to escape from it? Our inability to identify the existence of the Kingdom and our lack of understanding concerning the journey of life leaves us vulnerable to the misperceptions and distortions of those who say they “know”. These Spiritual impostors recognize our vulnerabilities and also know we will give anything to postpone the inevitable consequence of fear. (death)
We have an instinctual herd mentality which motivates us to run from fear in the same direction as the other herd members. We run from the pursuers even though it leads us into danger and in many cases, certain death. Intuitively, we know that dire consequences lay ahead, yet we run as fast as we can in hopes of escaping the fear of the unknown pursuer. We bow down to the words of the pretenders and supplicate our God to intervene on our behalf. God smiles and reminds us that, “Our Faith will set us free.” Our Faith, regrettably, was in the words of the impostors and we failed to see the light of Truth.
However, in some strange way we feel anchored to reality by the weight of our possessions and the implicit agreement of our social network, and the sophistic teachings of self annointed preachers. These “things”, others, and preachers give us a sense of validation and immortality. Our legacy, as it were.
We become like the drowning man who chooses to not let go of the bag of gold while the life preserver lay within reach. We are told to hold onto the gold. There is no other way to be rich. We then die poor.
We run and run, praying and hoping as we go that we will be delivered into the presence of the Holy of Holies. Saved from the Evil one.
We fail to realize and are unaware that no matter where we place our footprint, no matter how far we run we tread upon Holy ground and that the Holy of the Holies is as close to us as our breath.
In our haste, all we see is the dust of life arising from our anxious flight and believe that “this is all there is”, “life is hard” and “life is unfair”. The dust of our life is of our own making due to the running upon the path which is no a path, but we condemn the dust and the others who make dust. We cannot accept that we can be dusty or the cause of dust. We ignore our circumstance by criticizing and condemning others so we don’t face our own dust cloud.
It is not until we arrive at the edge of the precipice that we realize the path upon which we ran was the wrong path. It is never too late to stop the running and to find the path you may walk in peace.
